Teenage rebels
Twins, Johnny and Luther Htoo, leaders of a rebel group fighting
the Myanmarese military government surrendered in Thailand. The
boys claim to be 13-years-old and are said to have magical powers
that make them invincible in battle. They led a band known as
God's Army said to have been responsible for armed attacks in
Thailand in the last year and to have raided a village on the
Thailand-Myanmar border in December.
The Concorde flies again
Airport workers and a small crowd cheered as the elegant form of
the Concorde hurtled down the runway and disappeared into the sky
from the Charles de Gaulle airport, Paris, oncee again.
On July 25, 2000, the plane took off from Paris, and crashed into
a hotel two minutes later killing the 109 people on board and
four people on the ground. The Concordes then in service with Air
France and British Airways were grounded.
The latest 50-minute flight was to a military base near
Marseilles, for 15 days of tests which concern the aircraft's
performance on the ground. This is an indication of the French
Government's determination to get Concorde, still a great symbol
of national pride, back in the air.
Missing pachyderm
Photographs of a missing elephant filled newspapers in Austria,
as the people were urged to help track down the 24-year-old five-
ton pachyderm.
Customs officers were pursuing the cow elephant named Seila as
she had been sold illegally to a circus. By the time the
officials arrived, the circus director had fled with Seila and
two other elephants.
Baby bandit
A baby was used to sneak weapons past security guards with metal
detectors in a bank hold up in Brazil. The bandits made off with
about $1,500 in cash without firing a shot.
A woman, holding the infant, asked the guards to allow her use a
bathroom inside the bank. She then passed hidden pistols to her
male companions. The baby had not been checked by the guards with
metal detectors, a standard procedure for other visitors.
