Use IT for rural welfare: Rama Devi
By Our Special Correspondent
BANGALORE, JAN. 26. At an impressive ceremonial Republic Day
Parade here on Friday, the Governor, Ms. V.S.Rama Devi, while
complimenting the State Government on the efforts it was making
in different spheres, said it should use information technology
to benefit the rural people.
The Governor said it was a matter of pride that Karnataka was
making rapid strides in the field of information technology (IT),
but all this would not make sense if the work culture did not
change, particularly in government offices. Karnataka had
attracted investments from various multinationals, and a number
of important dignitaries had visited the State, particularly
Bangalore. The IT sector alone had attracted investment worth
over Rs. 10,000 crores and this was noteworthy.
She said that there were many areas the Government needed to
focus attention. One such was providing basic facilities to the
farmers who formed a major chunk of the population. Marketing and
storage facilities had to be created and they had to get a better
price for farm produce.
She complimented the State Government for handling the crisis
following the abduction of the film star, Mr. Rajkumar, by the
forest brigand, Veerappan. It had shown enormous restraint and
that had paid dividends. She added that there were divisive
forces at work, threatening the social fabric of the nation, and
people had to guard against this.
It was an impressive marchpast by the three wings of the armed
forces, Home Guards, fireforce personnel, National Social
Service; Bharat Scouts and Guides; Border Security Force, police
and the students of Ramana Maharishi School for the Blind. They
marched to the tunes played by the bands of ASC, KSRP and the BSF
and also the only school band of Little Flower English School,
Banashankari.
After the marchpast, there was a cultural programme, performed by
Sudarshan Vidya Mandir, human pyramid formation by 400 children
of Gandhi Vidyashala, Srirampuram, dance performance by 400
children of the Government High School, Chikkabidarakallu, and
classical dance performance by 600 children of B.M.English
School.
The programme concluded with Dollu Kunitha by a troupe from
Shimoga.
