Efforts on to check pilferage in farm sector

HYDERABAD, JAN. 25. A special drive in the South Circle of the
city by the Detection of Pilferage of Energy Units and the
operation staff of the A.P. Transco led to the detection of 587
pilferage cases, 498 stuck-up meters, 160 burnt ones and 185
sluggish meters in January so far.
Talking to presspersons on Thursday, Mr. Durga Prasad, Joint MD,
Vigilance, A.P. Transco, said the amount assessed in pilferage
cases was Rs. 77.83 lakhs. The number of cases compounded was 140
and 10 persons were arrested. The assessment collected in
compound cases was Rs. 12.5 lakhs. In all, Rs. 50.02 lakhs was
collected in all cases detected under various heads in the month.
In the Central Circle, 2,678 services were inspected and 133
pilferage cases were detected and the amount collected was Rs.
21.89 lakhs. In all, 17 cases were compounded and Rs. 1.40 lakhs
was collected so far during the month.
A special drive was under progress in industrial and other high-
value service areas throughout the State, he said. All industrial
estates in Rangareddy district were being subjected to
verification of status of meters and load existing in the
industries.
The Corporation collected Rs. 25.06 lakhs for various lapses, he
said. He added that the operational staff was being prepared for
an intensive drive for inspection of pilferage of energy in the
agricultural sector. During last week, 71 cases were booked
against defaulters and 63 cases of direct tapping and five cases
of phase shifters were also detected, he said.
Mr. Durga Prasad said that transformer failures had come down
from 6,536 in September, 2,000, to 3,601 in December due to
intensive drives. Action was initiated against an errant
assistant engineer in Nizamabad district for his complicity in
malpractice.
