Assault on Nishad: police seek identity parade
By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 22. The Cantonment Police have filed a
case in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) against
five students of the University College here who are wanted in
connection with the assault on the KSU(I) activist, Nishad.
The students, who are allegedly SFI activists, had earlier been
arrested by the police and had been released on bail by the
Judicial First Class Magistrate-III.
The police have submitted before the CJM that the students had
cheated the court and the police by providing false addresses
while seeking bail. They should, therefore, be summoned for an
identification parade.
According to the police, the following are the "correct" names
of the students: M. C. Sivaprasad (20), final year BA Hindi,
Adarsh S. Kurup (19), second year B.Sc Physics, Shaji. G (20),
final year BA Politics, Y.S. Bose (20), second year BA History
and C.M. Syamlal (21), first year BA Philosophy.
Nishad (20), who is the general secretary of the Nilamel NSS
College union, had been severely beaten up allegedly by SFI
activists on November 10. Three students of the NSS College who
allegedly colluded with Nishad's assailants, had been arrested
earlier.
The Cantonment Police had come in for sharp criticism from the
KSU(I) as well as Congress(I) leaders for allegedly making phoney
arrests and letting the real culprits escape.
