18th century diary to be released today

PONDICHERRY, MARCH 29. A diary maintained by Muthu Vijaya Tiruvengadam Pillai, grandson of Ananda Ranga Pillai, and relating to the period from 1794 to 1796 will be released at a function in the original house of Ananda Ranga Pillai here tomorrow.

The noted Tamil writer, Mr. Prabanjan, will release the book which has been edited and published by Dr. S. Jeyaseelan Stephen, a researcher working in the French School of Far Eastern Studies here.

A press communication from Dr. Jeyaseelan said the diary was discovered in the National Library in France and also in the National Archives of India at Pondicherry.

Stating that this was a very significant research work, the researcher said the entire work had been edited and published with critical introduction, historical notes, glossary, appendices, bibliography and index.

The diary has been published by the Institute for Indo-European Studies.

The daily events of Pondicherry from 1794 to 1796, several features of Pondicherry, its economy, society, especially the various social conditions, and culture had been well depicted by the diarist and it was a pioneering exploration.

Mr. Ananda Ranga Ravichandar, descendant of Ananda Ranga Pillai, will present the welcome address at tomorrow's book releasing function and receive the first copy of the book.

Dr. L. Ramamoorthy, Director of the Pondicherry Institute of Linguistics and Culture (PILC), and Dr. P. Ravikumar, Department of Tamil of Jaya College of Arts and Sciences, Chennai, will also speak.
