KOCHI: Among the four southern States in the country, petrol prices are lowest in the State, that average around Rs. 59 a litre, after Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL) and fellow state operators Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) raised the prices of the fuel.

The increase averages Rs.3.17 over the old price. In other southern States of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Hyderabad, the prices have crossed Rs. 60 a litre.

In Chennai, the average price is Rs. 60.02, an increase of Rs. 3.19 over the old price. In Madurai, it is Rs. 60.68, in Coimbatore Rs. 60.45 (increase of Rs. 3.19), in Bangalore Rs. 62.86, an increase of Rs. 3.21 and in Hyderabad it is Rs. 62.35, an increase of Rs. 3.26.

The lower rates in the State are because of lesser rate of tax, according to an official of HPCL.

In the Union Territory of Puducherry, the price is Rs.54.15, an increase of Rs.2.55, and in Mahe, it is Rs.53.91, an increase of Rs.2.88 over the older price.
