Tatkal address proof cards to be issued at five more post offices

K. Lakshmi

CHENNAI: Residents seeking address proof card under the tatkal system need no longer travel to Anna Road head post office as the Department of Posts plans to issue cards to such applicants at five more post offices across the city from December 15.

Officials of the Department of Posts said that at present, such customers can purchase the applications and submit them only at the Anna Road HPO. After processing of the applications, at the office of the Postmaster General, Chennai City Region, on the same campus, the cards are issued at the HPO.

With the patronage for the address proof cards increasing, the department has decided to also issue the tatkal applications at T.Nagar HPO (Chennai city central division), T.Nagar sub post office (Chennai city south division), Ethiraj Salai sub post office, Tambaram HO (Tambaram division), and the GPO on Rajaji Salai.

Under the tatkal system, the applicants are charged a fee of Rs.600 and issued the card within five working days. The decision to extend the service to five more post offices would help the applicants save time on travel. It would help the department issue the cards faster, officials said.

Since the five more post offices would collect applications from those living in its jurisdiction, the address verification process would be completed on the same day by the public relation officers with the assistance of the respective post men. The applicants would be sent a text message once the card is ready.

The address proof card is accepted as a valid document to get driving licence, ration card, LPG connection, by the railways and for opening bank accounts, the officials added. The department has represented to the Chief Passport Officer, New Delhi, to approve the card as a proof of address.

R.Venkataraman, Senior Superintendent of Post Office (City Central Division), said that about 1,800 cards have been distributed under the tatkal system by the Anna Road HPO since May this year.

The department is confident of an increase in the number as in the past two years it had issued about 90,000 cards under the normal mode for which it collects a fee of Rs.250.

It earned a revenue of Rs.2.6 crore. As part of its efforts to expedite the field verification process, the department has also engaged 30 of its marketing executives for the job, he said.
