MI retains key players

Mumbai: Mumbai Indians (MI) have retained Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga, Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan for IPL seasons 2011 and 2012.

A public relations agency representing the MI announced the retention of the four players on Wednesday.

A franchise can retain up to four players with a maximum of three Indians and that such players should have been in the franchise's registered squad for the 2010 season.

The IPL rules also state that irrespective of the actual fee to be paid to the players, the salary cap for the franchise shall be charged as follows: $1.8 million per annum for the first player retained, $1.3m pa for the second player, $0.9m pa for the third player, and $0.5m pa for the fourth player.

MI will now be charged $4.5 million for seasons 2011 and 2012 each. It will now be allowed to spend a sum of $4.5 million at the players' auction to be held sometime in January 2011.

The IPL Governing Council had set an overall salary cap of $5 million for season 2008, $2 million for 2009 and $750,000 for 2010. With the completion of three seasons of IPL, the GC has revised the salary cap to $9 million.

For the 2011 season the player contracts will be managed by BCCI. The player contract will be signed by the BCCI, franchise and the player.

The IPL CEO Sundar Raman said that Kings XI Punjab have asked for the deadline time to be extended and that the complete list will be announced only after Wednesday midnight. The news doing the rounds though is that Chennai Super Kings have retained M.S. Dhoni, Suresh Raina, M. Vijay and Albie Morkel. Delhi Daredevils have retained Virender Sehwag, Rajasthan Royals, Shane Warne and Shane Watson.
