Easy wins for Humpy, Harika

NEW DELHI: K. Humpy and D. Harika took a step closer to a place in the third round after winning the first games of their second round matches of the Women World chess championship at Hatey, Turkey, on Tuesday.

Humpy, playing white, was never threatened by England's Jovanka Houska, rated 179 point below, and won in 40 moves after her queen played a dominant role.

Harika, too, cruised to an easy victory in 43 moves after playing from the black side of Ruy Lopez against Russia's Tatiana Shadrina.

Both the Indian girls now need just a draw in the second game on Wednesday to move into the third round of this 64-player knockout event.
