Free school for mentally-challenged children

SCB venture to help parents provide quality education and physiotherapy

Close to 40 ‘special' children in Rasoolpura slums

School to be established at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh

HYDERABAD: In what could be a first-of-its-kind venture among Cantonment Boards, Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) is planning to establish an exclusive free school for mentally and physically challenged children residing under SCB limits at Rasoolpura.

There are close to 40 such children residing in Rasoolpura slums, hence it is planned to set up a school for them in the area. SCB Chief Executive Officer C. Ravindra said the school would be established with a cost of Rs. 20 lakh. Five qualified teachers would be training children in different subjects. Besides this, physiotherapists would also be serving at the school to extend free treatment.

“Already the project proposal has been sent to the Centre for approval. Once the project is approved, constructions works would commence in two months,” said Mr. Ravindra.

Early diagnosis

The objective is to help parents provide quality education and physiotherapy to their mentally and physically-challenged children. Emphasis would be on early detection of such cases. If the disability is diagnosed early, there are more chances of children to respond positively to the treatment, he explains.

After basic education, the teachers would later provide vocational education training to senior children, in a bid to make them eligible to earn their livelihood.
