Municipalities get new chiefs

MALAPPURAM: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the district heaved a sigh of relief when it won the Perinthalmanna municipal council through a draw of lots on Monday.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) had come to power in the remaining six municipalities in the district. Sudha Kumari of the CPI(M) was named chairperson of the Perinthalmanna municipality. K.P. Ravindran of the Congress will be the vice-chairman. Both were elected through a draw of lots.

LDF's M.K. Sreedharan proposed the name of Ms. Kumari and was seconded by Nishi Anil Raj. UDF's K.P. Ravi proposed the name of Suraiyya Farook to the president's post.

Both candidates won 17 votes each. This is LDF's fourth term in power in Perinthalmanna.

Padinjarakath Beevi of the IUML assumed office as chairperson of Ponnani municipality. P. Ramakrishnan of the Congress is the vice-chairman.

K. Safiya of the IUML took office as chairperson of Tirur municipality. P. Ramankutty of the Congress is the vice-chairman.

In Malappuram municipality, K.P. Mustafa of the IUML and K.M. Girija of the Congress assumed office as chairman and vice-chairperson respectively.

Ishaq Kurikkal of the IUML became chairman of Manjeri municipality. E.K. Visalakshi is the vice-chairperson.

Bushara Shabeer and Paroli Moosakutty Haji of the IUML assumed office as the first chairperson and vice-chairman respectively of Kottakkal municipality.

Aryadan Shoukath of the Congress assumed office as the first chairman of Nilambur municipality. Adukkath Asya of the IUML is the vice-chairperson.

In Palakkad

The Congress and its allies captured power in all four municipalities of Palakkad district.

In Palakkad municipality, Congress candidate Abdul Khudoos defeated BJP nominee N. Shivarajan by a margin of nine votes. The Congress nominee received 24 votes as against 15 secured by the BJP candidate.

The nine-member-strong Left Democratic Front and an Independent member abstained from voting. Three votes were invalid. IUML's S. Saheeda was elected vice-chairperson.

In Shoranur municipality, M.R. Murali of the JVS (formed by the former CPI(M) leaders) was elected with the support of the UDF as chairman.

T. Seena of the Congress was elected vice-chairperson of the municipality.

In Ottappalam municipality, Congress candidate Rani Jose was elected chairperson with 17 votes as against LDF candidate Subida's 15 votes. The UDF was supported by CPI(M) rebels in the council. P.M.A. Jaleel of the Congress was elected vice-chairman.

In Chittur-Thathamangalam municipality, Congress candidate V. Sumathy was elected chairperson.
