Film festival on Philip K. Dick

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Chavara Movie Circle will organise a film festival titled “Introducing Philip K. Dick” – which includes a documentary on the author and a film based on his novel.

The American novelist, short story writer and essayist wrote exclusively in the science fiction genre.

Nine of his stories were adapted into films of commercial success. This included the films ‘Blade Runner', ‘Total Recall', ‘A Scanner Darkly' and ‘Minority Report'.

He was the first science fiction writer to be included in The Library of America series in 2007.

The first film in the festival will be ‘A Day in The Afterlife' – a 1994 BBC documentary on the author's life and his oeuvre that included 44 novels and 121 short stories.

It is said that very few writers could influence contemporary philosophy like Philip Dick and his dominance on post-modernism has been acknowledged by modern philosophers and theoreticians like Jean Baudrillard, Frederic Jameson and Slavoj Zizek.

The next film to be screened in the festival is ‘A Scanner Darkly', the animated film made in 2006 by Richard Linklater based on the novel of the same title by Philip Dick.

The storyline, placed in a near future, has an undercover policeman losing his identity due to the use of a dangerous new drug.

Visual impact

The film's different visual impact was created by shooting the film originally in digital format and then animating it using interpolated rotoscope method.

The films will be screened at Chavara Public Library hall in Kochi on Saturday at 3.30 p.m.
