Institutes urged to develop affordable technology

Kozhikode: T. Ramasami, Secretary, Union Ministry of Science and Technology, has said that technical institutions such as the National Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institutes of Technology can encourage research leading to the development of innovative and affordable technology for the common man.

He was speaking after inaugurating the “Tathva” lecture series on the National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C) campus at Chathamangalam, near here, on Saturday.

The lecture series is part of Tathva-10, a techno-management festival of the institute.

Dr. Ramasami explained how the Indian economy had maintained a steady growth despite the global economic slowdown.

Later, he interacted with the students.

The lecture series will have talks and presentations by eminent persons from the field of science and technology, including G. Madhavan Nair, former chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation; Bikash Singha, Director, Variable Energy Cyclotron; and M.S. Raghunathan, Professor of Eminence at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.

A videoconferencing session with Johannes Orphael, Head of the Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, will be held from 2.30 p.m. on October 23. The golden jubilee edition of “Tathva,” which offers more than Rs.10 lakh in cash awards to the winners in competitions, will be held from October 21 to 24 on the campus.

The website of ‘Tathva 2010', www.tathva.org, was earlier inaugurated by G.R.C Reddy, Director, NIT-C. Details of the festival may be had from the website.

Kalanidhi, NIT-C senate member and former Vice-Chancellor of Anna University, Chennai, and Dr. Reddy were present at the inauguration of the lecture series.
