‘Stop Ketan Desai from heading WMA'

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Several top medical professionals, IMA members and well-known scientist Pushpa N. Bhargava, have urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Medical Council of India (MCI) to act immediately and stop former MCI chief Ketan Desai from being installed as president of World Medical Association.

At a press conference here on Wednesday, apart from Dr. Bhargava, President of the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation and leading nephrologist A. Gopal Kishan, well-known cardiologist Sudhir Naik and others said that allowing Dr. Desai, who was arrested for taking bribe of Rs.2 crore for granting recognition to a medical college in Punjab, to head WMA would be an insult to medical and all other professionals in the country. Referring to the grant of bail, they expressed surprise how his passport was released to allow him to travel to Canada to attend WMA meet in October.

They said the board of governors of MCI had suspended his permission to practice medicine and debarred him from being a physician. That meant he was no more a medical practitioner or practising physician and hence not a member of medical profession.

Dr. Gopal Kishan said they had also represented to WMA to desist from installing Dr. Desai as its president. While he was MCI chief, he organised the council meeting of WMA at Delhi and got himself elected as its president-elect. They would also try to meet the Prime Minister on the issue during his visit to the City on October 19.

Dr. Shyam Sundar, former vice-chancellor, NTR Health University, Dr. Ramdas Alurker, President, IMA Hyderabad, Dr .B. N. Reddy, former president IMA Hyderabad, Dr. B. S. Yadav, former chairman, AP Medical Council and Dr. Dilip Banushali, IMA member were present.
