SANGAREDDY: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Bandaru Dattatreya on Wednesday alleged that Minister for Rural Development Vatti Vasanta Kumar was responsible for the suicides being committed by women across the district. He said inaction by the government led to establishment of micro-finance institutions (MFIs) in the State. Speaking to reporters after consoling the family of a woman at Chinnayapalli in Chinnasankarampet mandal, who allegedly committed suicide unable to bear the harassment by micro-finance institutions, Mr. Dattatreya said around 93 women in the State committed suicide so far unable to bear the harassment by micro-finance institutions. Ex gratia sought He demanded that the State government pay an ex gratia of Rs. 5 lakh each to these families. Asking the government to appoint a committee to control operations of micro-finance institutions, former president of the State BJP leader said banks were not coming forward to extend loans forcing the poor to depend on micro-finance institutions. CPI dharna Meanwhile, Communist Party of India (CPI) leaders held a dharna before the mandal office at Patancheru demanding that the State take action and close the offices of micro-finance institutions.
