Vijay Kumar to head CRPF

NEW DELHI/CHENNAI: K. Vijay Kumar, 58, Director, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad, will be the new Director-General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) headquartered in New Delhi, authoritative sources said on Saturday.
He replaces Vikram Srivastava, who has been transferred and posted as Director of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), in the place of Prasun Mukherjee, who retired on September 30.
Mr. Srivastava, who took charge in February this year, faced criticism in the wake of the Dantewada massacre in Chhattisgarh on April 6 in which 75 CRPF jawans were killed by Maoists.
Mr. Vijay Kumar, a 1975-batch IPS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, is expected to take charge of his new assignment on Wednesday. He is the only IPS officer in the State to have been awarded with the President's Police Medal for Gallantry.
Famed operations
Mr. Vijay Kumar shot to fame while leading Special Task Force (STF) operations against the dreaded forest brigand Veerappan and his associates, who were gunned down in October 2004.
Mr. Vijay Kumar is the first officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre chosen to head the CRPF.
Earlier, he was part of the Special Protection Group team that provided security to the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi.
He had a stint in the Special Security Group and later he served as Inspector-General of Police (Operations) in the BSF in Kashmir. During his tenure in the NPA, Mr. Vijay Kumar made jungle warfare training mandatory to IPS probationers.
