Water released from Vaigai Dam

For irrigation of 1.50 lakh acres in Madurai, Dindigul and Sivaganga districts

THENI: Water was released from the Vaigai Dam for irrigation of 1.50 lakh acres of agriculture lands in Madurai, Dindigul and Sivaganga districts here on Saturday.

Minister for Adi Dravida Welfare A. Tamilarasi released the water.

Madurai Collector C. Kamaraj, who accompanied the Minister, told reporters that initially 1,800 cusecs of water had been released from the dam.

A total of 1,50,043 acres of land – 1,42,008 acres in Madurai district, 1,996 acres in Dindigul district and 6,039 acres in Sivaganga district – would be benefited.

The Collector appealed to the farmers to use water judiciously and raise short term crops. He advised farmers to extend full cooperation to officials of the Departments of Agriculture and Public Works. “If there was any deficiency in the monsoon or shortage of rainfall, turn system would be introduced on the basis of storage in the dam, he added.

Comfortable storage

At present, the storage was comfortable to irrigate the first crop under its ayacut.

Water level stood at 63.75 feet in the Vaigai dam this morning. The storage was 4,357 mcft. Storage in the dam on the same day last year was 57.45 feet only. Total Periyar credit was 5,814 mcft, which was 4,666 mcft during the same period last year. Storage level was 53 feet in Manjalar dam, 38 feet in Marudhanadhi dam, 102.33 feet in Sothuparai dam and 30 feet in Shanmuga river reservoir.

District Revenue Officer R Brinda Devi and other officials took part.
