Yashwanth, Shubham hog limelight

HYDERABAD: A double century by M. Yashwanth (208 not out, 19 x 4, 14x6) and a five-wicket haul by Shubham Yadav (five for 28) helped Greenlands record a thumping 223-run win over Starlets in the HCA Schools league cricket championship here on Wednesday. Rohit Bharadwaj was unbeaten on 61 for the winner.

The scores:

Schools league: Greenlands 336 for one (Sandeep Mandhar Goud 44, M. Yashwanth Reddy 208 not out, R. Rohit Bharadwaj 61 not out) bt Starlets 113 (Shubam Yadav five for 28) .

Hindu School in final

Hindu Public School defeated Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (Jubilee Hills) 29-6 to set up a title-clash with Word & Deed which put it across HAL 26-15 in the other semifinal of the boys' basketball event of the Kanjerla Shankar Yadav memorial sports meet here.

Semifinals: Boys:

Basketball: Hindu Public School bt Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Jubilee Hills, 29-6; Word & Deed bt HAL 26-15.

Volleyball: Vignan, Nizampet, bt Hindu Public School 25-16, 25-17; Word & Deed bt DAV Kukatpally 25-13, 25-13.

Girls: Basketball: Hindu Public School bt Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Jubilee Hills, 12-10; Don Bosco bt Holy Mary 22-16 .

Ex-HHA official dead

S.P. Satyanarayana, former treasurer of Hyderabad Hockey Association, passed away here on Tuesday. He was 84. He represented Madras University in the All India inter-varsity championships in football and hockey.

HHA senior officials N. Jagadish, G. Satyanarayana and S.P. Ramesh, secretary of Ranga Reddy District football Association, expressed condolences to the bereaved family members.

St. Ann's lifts trophy

St. Ann's College defeated Kasturba Gandhi College 46-22 in the final of the Osmania University inter-college women's basketball tournament here. St. Francis College claimed the 3rd place after defeating Villa Marie College 40-10.

The results: Final: St. Ann's College 46 (Sandhya 19, Preethi 13) bt Kasturba Gandhi College 22.

3rd place: St. Francis College 40 (Jennifer 10, Sangeetha 13, Ashmita 10) bt Villa Marie College 10 .

Ambedkar College wins

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar College won the Osmania University inter-college championship for men defeating Bhavan's New Science College 40-25 in the final.

For the winners, Ramesh and Hemanth played well while for the losers Rakesh and Lingam Yadav put up a fine show.

Brilliant Trophy chess

Brilliant Chess Academy will organise the 52nd Brilliant Trophy Open chess tournament on September 11 and 12 on its premises in Dilsukhnagar here with a total prize money of Rs. 10,000 in the open category.

In the junior category, special prizes will be given to top two places each in under-six, eight, 10, 12 and 14 years (boys and girls) sections.

Vignan Global in final

Vignan Global (Nizampet) defeated Omanand High School 25-22, 25-15 while, Government High School (Jamia Osmania) put it across Word & Deed, Hayathnagar, 25-14, 25-23 in the boys semifinals of the 22nd Regal Sports inter-school volleyball tournament for Naresh memorial trophy at Mushirabad Playground here.

In the girls section, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (Jubilee Hills) and St. Pious High School (Ramnagar) entered the final.

The results: Semifinals: Boys: Vignan Global (Nizampet) bt Omanand HS 25-22, 25-15; Govt High School, Jamia Osmania, bt Word & Deed, Hayathnagar, 25-14, 25-23.

Srikanth is champion

P. Srikanth of Surya Telugu daily was declared the overall champion in the Tirupati inter-media sports meet, sponsored by Amararaja Batteries, on Wednesday, according to information received here.
