Chennai: World Under-16 chess champion S.P. Sethuraman of Chennai tied for the first place but took third place on lower tie-break count in the Malaysian Open that concluded at Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday. Sethuraman posted a whopping rating performance of 2619 and would be increasing his 2513 rating by another 12 Elo points. Although his show qualified for a Grandmaster strength rating performance, the technicality of not meeting enough Grandmasters cost him a final Grandmaster norm. Sethuraman attributed this success to the confidence he gained by doing well in the Paris Open and Czech Republic tournaments recently. He is playing next in the under-18 section of the World Youth championship in Greece next month. Final placings (tie-break order): 1-3. GM Cao Sang (Vie), GM Zhou Weiqi (Chn), IM S.P. Sethuraman (Ind) 7/9 each; 4-10. GM Abhijeet Gupta (Ind), IM Nguyen Van Huy (Vie), GM Wen Yang (Chn), IM Swayangsu Satyapragyan (Ind), Wan Yunguo (Chn), GM David Smerdon (Aus), IM Gao Rui (Chn) 6.5 each; 30. WGM S. Vijayalakshmi, 32. IM Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury, 33. IM Suvrajit Saha 5.5 each; 41. GM S. Arun Prasad, 42. IM Ashwin Jayaram, 44. IM Swapnil Dhopade, 45. IM N. Srinath, 59. Gaurav Bakliwal 5 each; 60. GM R.R. Laxman, 61. IM Anup Deshmukh, 69. FM Joydeep Dutta 4.5 each; 122. Hetul Shah 2.5 . — Arvind Aaron
