Sri Krishna College wins volleyball title

CHENNAI: Sri Krishna College (Coimbatore) clinched the volleyball title in the Bertram memorial tournaments by maintaining a clean slate in the semifinal league matches.

In its final league match on Friday at Loyola, Sri Krishna overcame a stiff challenge from the host and emerged triumphant at 16-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-22 in one hour and 30 minutes. Aditanar College finished second by virtue of winning two matches in the semifinal league. Loyola, after losing two matches, settled for third spot.

Loyola had an outside chance of winning the crown when it took on Sri Krishna in what was the last league match of the day.

Requiring a win with more than an eight-point margin, Loyola entered the contest with positive thinking and it reflected in its performance, especially in the first two sets.

Libero Sathish Kumar's tireless retrievals, Surendar's wonderful smashes, Vijith Kumar's effective blocking and setter Sagaya Amalraj's creative work helped Loyola claim the first set.

It was a close contest in the second. With the scores level at 24, attacker Anurag Naik, who had a huge influence on the match, sealed the second set with two consecutive smashes.

Crucial victory

The victory in the crucial second set gave Sri Krishna the necessary momentum to move ahead with confidence.

In the third and fourth sets, Sri Krishna's Ananth shone with his steep and well-placed smashes while Siva Rajan and Deepesh Kumar blocked well.

The results (semifinal league):

Sri Krishna bt Loyola 16-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-22.

Sri Krishna bt Aditanar 25-22, 25-23, 25-19.

Sri Krishna bt Jamal Md. College 25-20, 25-20, 25-18.

Aditanar bt Loyola 25-23, 25-23, 25-22.

Aditanar bt Jamal Md. 25-22, 25-22, 25-21.
