Jhansi beats SAI (Madikeri)

Mysore: Jhansi XI registered a exciting 2-1 win overSAI (Madikeri) in their final Group ‘A' league tie and topped the Group with five wins from as many games in the all-India invitation hockey tournament for women conducted by the National Sports day celebration committee at the Chamundivihar hockey grounds here on Friday.

SAI (Madikeri) went into a early lead through a field goal from right-out Chandini in the 2nd minute of the game. Jhansi equalised through Prakash Choudhry in the 22nd minute. Poonam Giri increased the lead in the 35th minute through a penalty corner conversion.

SAI-Madikeri also qualified from Group ‘A' by finishing second in the group with three wins and a loss from their four games.

In another crucial Group ‘B' game, DYSS, Mysore scored a 9-0 win over SAI (Chennai) to top the group and enter the semifinals.

Centre-forward Munirathnamma continued her goal scoring five (20th, 30th, 33rd, 43rd & 46th minutes). Sandya (8th), Harinakshi (48th) and Prema (2nd min) were the other scorers.

SAI (Chennia) finished second in Group ‘A' and also qualified for the semi-finals.

The results: League: Group A: Jhansi bt SAI (Madikeri) 2-1; Jhansi bt Bellary 6-0; SAI (Madikeri) bt Hassan 3-0; Sports School, Kudige bt Kovilpatti XI 4-0; Bellary bt Sports School, Kudige 2-1. Group B: DYSS, Mysore bt STC (Chennai) 9-0; DYSS, Mysore bt Sports School, Ponnampet 17-0; Ananthpur Hockey Academy bt Ponnampet Sports School 4-0 .
