KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan is expected to face stiff challenge while defending the Sahara Calcutta Football League premier division title as the fresh domestic season restarts the rivalry among the famous few of one of the oldest football leagues of the world. The top teams — former champion East Bengal, Chirag United SC and Mohammedan Sporting, apart from Bagan — have built up strong sides that will intensify the contest for the title. Mohammedan Sporting will begin the action among the fancied sides on Sunday while the three I-League sides Chirag United SC, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan start their journey on the next three days respectively. The premier division league, like the previous year, will have 17 teams locking horns in a single tier round-robin format. There will be 136 matches spread over seven venues. The organiser — Indian Football Association — expects to wind up the expansive fixture by November 15. Apart from the famous four mentioned, the other teams participating are Peerless SC, Geroge Telegraph SC, Calcutta Port Trust, BNR SC, Kalighat MS, Tollygunge Agragami, Eastern Railway SC, Aryan Club, West Bengal Police, Railway FC, Southern Samity, Kalighat Club and Mohemmedan AC.
