Parthasarathy prevails

CHENNAI: Qualifier A.K. Parthasarathy of Andhra Pradesh overcame the minor inconvenience of dysentery and having played three matches in the day to upset second-seeded Arjun Khade of Maharasthra 10-9(4) in a quarterfinal of the adidas-MCC National junior and sub-junior tennis tournament here on Friday.

Parthasarathy, appearing drained and down for the count, was up a break (7-6) in the best-of-19 encounter when he decided to avail himself of a medical timeout. The left-hander then hung on to close the match at four in the tie-break, booking himself a place in the semifinal.

In other boys' under-18 quarterfinals, top-seeded Mohit Mayur of Tamil Nadu blasted past Andhra Pradesh's Sai Saran Reddy 10-5, while the defending champion and sixth seed, Ramkumar Ramanathan, recorded a 10-6 win over Neeraj Elangovan.

In the girls' under-18 quarterfinals, Aishwarya Aggarwal upset top-seeded Prarthana Thombre of Maharasthra 10-9(4). Qualifier Eetee Mehta of Gujarat thrashed Akshara Iska of Andhra Pradesh 10-4. Tamil Nadu's Sharon Sanjana Paul also made the semifinals with a 10-2 win over Ankita Bhatia of Haryana.

Boys: U-18: Mohit Mayur (TN) bt B. Sai Saran Reddy (AP) 10-5, Ramkumar Ramnathan (TN) bt Nereraj Elangovan (TN) 10-6, A.K. Parthasarathy bt Arjun Khade (Mah) 10-9(4).

U-14: Sumit Nagal (Del) bt Naveen Anand (Guj) 10-8, Fatehdeep Singh (Pun) bt P. Vignesh (TN) 10-6, Sahil Deshmukh (Mah) bt Shailendra Boniface (Del) 10-1.

Girls': U-18: Aishwarya Agarwal (MP) bt Prarthana Thombre (Mah) 10-9(4), Eetee Mehta (Guj) bt Akshara Iska (AP) 10-4, Sharon Sanjana Paul (TN) bt Ankita Bhatia (Har) 10-2, Sharmada Balu (Kar) bt B. Soujanya (AP) 10-5.
