The facility to be introduced in three to six months.

CHENNAI: Weather forecasts at district level will soon be available as the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, proposes to introduce the facility in three to six months.

At present, the centre provides forecast under four broad categories: for north and south-coastal Tamil Nadu and for interior parts in the north and south of the State.

Y.E.A. Raj, Deputy Director General of Meteorology of the Centre, told The Hindu that at present, forecast is being given twice a day. Once the district level forecast is ready, the Meteorological Department would be able to give details four times a day. The information would also be made available on the official website, he said.

The department will generate rainfall forecast for five days. The service for the last two days would be more of an outlook, which may not be accurate, he said. The other parameters such as temperature and humidity would be added later.

Observing that the Indian Meteorological Department has begun offering the service at national level, he said the information is being used for forecasting weather's impact on agriculture.

The department has also started introducing new applications on its website, www.imdchennai.gov.in. The daily forecast for Chennai and the southern region of the country is being updated in Tamil. An official of the Meterological Department said there is a proposal to start a similar page in Hindi in a few months.

The daily rainfall graph of Tamil Nadu with details on average rainfall, the amount realised and the departure from average rainfall is also given, the official said.
