KOLKATA: S. Mari Arul of Southern Railway won her final round match to make it 7.5 points and claimed the individual crown in the 23rd all-India Railway chess championship here at the Khudiram Stadium on Thursday. Mari Arul, one of the overnight leaders, beat Arindam Mukherjee of Eastern to clear her way to the sole lead in the ninth and final round. The remaining four players, who shared the overnight lead, drew their matches to fall out of the title race. There was a six-way tie on seven points for second place. Vikramjit Singh (South Central), Amardeep Bartakke and Arjun Tiwari (both Western), took the next three positions behind the champion after the tiebreak scores were calculated. The top three players qualified for the National B chess which will be held in Bhiwani, Haryana from September 15 to 26. Western Railway earlier became the team champion. The top finishers: 1. S. Mari Arul (Southern) 7.5; 2. Vikramjit Singh (South Central), 3. Amardeep Bartakke, 4. Arjun Tiwari (both Western), 5. A. Shankar (Southern), 6. Akshat kamparia (Western), 7. Prakash Ram (Northern).
