Special Correspondent

Surjit Singh Barnala

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Saturday urged the people to dedicate themselves to build a strong, self-confident, self-reliant and self-sufficient India. Extending his Independence Day greetings, he said in a message, “It is our bounden duty to safeguard our nation's freedom.”

He said, “Let us on this historic day join hands to strengthen the bonds of unity, peace and harmony and build a prosperous India.”

Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi said to continue enjoying the fruits of independence, people should take a vow to remove caste and religious barriers and work unitedly with a sense of goodwill.

Former Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa said the occasion should guide the people to eliminate terrorism and to live with love and affection towards one another.

On Independence Day, people should work towards eradicating liquor as this alone would help save them from becoming impoverished, PMK founder S.Ramadoss, said.

CPI (M) State secretary G.Ramakrishnan said the party would continue to work towards protecting non-alignment, secularism, country's sovereignty, democracy and gender equality, and fight for women's reservation.

DMDK leader Vijayakanth said the freedom won should be beneficial to all. The Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, said people should realise at least now that democracy and social justice were not just inter-linked, but also inter-dependent.
