Delay in disbursing funds to be addressed

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The State government is holding meetings with officials to address the delay in disbursing funds under the Kalaignar Health Insurance Scheme to government hospitals, Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam said here on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Dr. Kamakshi Memorial Hospital, Pallikaranai, for providing specialised cancer treatment, he said officials were trying to overcome the procedural delays in distributing the 40 per cent funds due to hospitals.

Under the insurance scheme, 40 per cent of the payment made to the State government, towards every surgery conducted in a government hospital should be returned to the hospital. The respective departments would spend 25 per cent of the funds received to improve their facilities.

The rest of the money will be paid as incentive to the hospital staff for working extra time. Under the scheme, so far 1.71 lakh people had been treated for various diseases and Rs.459 crore spent on the beneficiaries, he said. A total of 28,988 cancer patients were treated under the scheme.

“We are upgrading facilities at the government-run Cancer hospital in Kancheepuram and will establish a specialised cancer institute at the Government Royapettah Hospital. We are also considering buying advanced equipment for cancer treatment,” Mr. Panneerselvam said.

The insurance scheme has been a boon to the poor as they need not wait for treatment at government hospitals, he added.

Chairman of Dr. Kamakshi Memorial Hospital T.G. Govindarajan explained the benefits of the digital linear accelerator procured by the hospital at a cost of Rs.15 crore.

Star Health and Allied Insurance Company Managing Director S. Prakash and health officials from Kancheepuram district participated.
