Indian Bank in last four

CHENNAI: Indian Bank (IB) reached the semifinals with a confident 2-1 win over Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in the IOB-Syed Ahmed memorial hockey tournament at the SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Monday.

Quick on the wings and playing fast-paced hockey, IB dominated the first half with some moves that flummoxed the ICF defence. IB could have gone ahead in the fourth minute but for goalkeeper Barani Raja who dived to his right to put away a strong drive from Nishanth off a penalty corner. Twenty minutes later, Nishanth sounded the boards with a broad sweep off a corner.

ICF was quick on counter-attacks but couldn't convert the chances that came its way.

In one such move involving Ramesh Babu and Sarath Babu, the former failed to strike despite being in an advantageous position After a series of failed counter-attacks, ICF equalised with a minute to go for half-time when Saravanan deftly deflected a powerful strike from the left by Sathish Kumar.

Ashwin, who impressed with his speed and stickwork, passed one from the left and V. Raja directed it into the net for the match-winner in the 41st minute.

The teams that have made the semifinal league are IOB, IB and Southern Railway. The fourth team will be decided on Tuesday after the match between SAI and Tamil Nadu Police.
