Senior advocate Visveswara passes away

BANGALORE: Senior advocate and one of the most well-known figures in the Karnataka High Court G.S. Visveswara (76) passed away at his residence in Basaveshwarnagar here on Monday.

He was ailing for some time.

Known for his wit and sharp tongue, Mr. Visveswara was a role model for young advocates. He resigned as presiding officer of a lower court when the then Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, Govinda Bhat, alleged that presiding officers and judges of lower courts are corrupt. After he resigned, Mr. Visveswara had initiated contempt proceedings against Mr. Bhat.

A native of Hassan, Mr. Visveswara is survived by his wife, two sons, one of whom is a practising advocate in the Supreme Court, and a daughter. A large number of judges and advocates paid their respects to Mr. Visveswara and the last rites were conducted at the crematorium in Chamarajpet.
