Special Correspondent

Research done here will benefit society in future

CHENNAI: A national facility on ‘Neurotoxicity Research to Assist Drug Development' was dedicated to the nation at a function held at the Dr. A. Lakshmanasamy Mudaliar Post Graduate Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (Dr ALMPGIBMS) campus in Taramani on Saturday.

Speaking after dedicating the new facility, T. Ramasami, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, said the students of University of Madras in 1940s, 50s and 60s later became important citizens who contributed for the development of the country. At that time the University was truly on a global scale, Dr. Ramasami said.

Talking about the facility he said it was being created to do some important research work that would benefit society in the future. This national facility was a knowledge enhancer that offered great sense of service, he said.

The Department was like a nursery keeper, which would not know that the seed sowed by it would germinate into a sapling and then to a tree that would provide shadow as well fruits in the future.

The research institutions such as Dr. ALMPGIBMS would complete the research that would help the common man, he added.

Speaking at the functionG. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras, said mere preparation of a project would not help in getting the funding from the Department of Science and Technology. It should be able to convince the funding agency, he said.

J. Mohanasundaram, Dean, Madras Medical College, recalled the long association between the University and his hospital.

S.L. Maheswari, Principal Investigator and R. Venkatakrishna Murali, Co-PI, Professor and Head of the Institute were among those who spoke.
