Hadapad community demands OBC status

Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: Karnataka Rajya Hadapad Samaja Horata Vedike has urged the State Government to declare Hadapad community as non-Lingayat and include it in the category I of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) list. Vedike's State president Maruthi B. Hadapad told presspersons here on Friday that though members of Hadapad community were socially, financially and educationally backward, they were deprived of the benefits of reservation as the community name had been mentioned as “Lingayat Hadpad” in government records. Hadapad community members whose traditional occupation was cutting hair became the followers of Basaveshwara in the 12th century.

They were treated on a par with Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes people in society. But in records they were mentioned as “forward caste” and were identified as “Lingayat Hadapad”, he said.
