Learning through findings:M. Chidambaram, Director, National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi, addressing an annual workshop on ‘Research Areas in Computer Science' in Tiruchi on Friday. TIRUCHI: The first annual workshop on Research Areas in Computer Science organised by the School of Computer Science and Engineering and Bharathidasan University Technology Park (BUTP) here on Friday exposed over 100 M.Phil and Ph.D. scholars from the university-affiliated colleges to the centrality of problem solving in research pursuits. Shortage of guides In the backdrop of shortage of guides for computer science research being conspicuously felt in higher educational institutions, the workshop sought to put the participants on the right trajectory through an orientation on recent research trends and tools, and the methodology for a purposeful research. At the outset, researchers need to have a clear understanding of the works carried out so far in the chosen area by perennially referring to reviewed research journals of repute, the Director of National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi M. Chidambaram said, inaugurating the workshop. Research was all about identifying new problems and arriving at solutions or improving upon existing solutions to the already identified problems. Dr. Chidambaram advised researchers to persevere and take in their stride frustrations over periodic non-acceptance of their findings in the given form by their guides. Through expansion of knowledge base over a time period, an ideal researcher is bound to be the source of additional information even for the guide, he observed, emphasising that researchers must all along be guided by the motivation to get their findings published in internationally recognised journals. Presiding over, the Director of BUTP Gopinath Ganapathy cited the instance of Microsoft Corporation's establishment of research divisions in 17 countries to highlight the importance being accorded by industries for research. Research is a continuous process; the more you know, the more you will need to know, Dr. Gopinath said. Objective The objective of the workshop was to throw light on research ideas, and recent research trends and tools, the Organising Secretary E. George Dharma Prakashraj said. R. Krishnamoorthy, Dean, Anna University – Tiruchi, delivered a lecture on ‘Research Areas in Computer Science'; Naga Chokkanathan, Director, R & D, CRMIT Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, on ‘Mobile Computing'; M. Kallidoss, Associate Professor, St. Joseph's College, on ‘Latex – A Research Journal Paper Writing; and Michael Arok, Assistant Professor, National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi, on ‘DNA Computing'. The Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University M. Ponnavaikko delivered the valedictory address and distributed certificates to the participants.
