Bangalore: A 40-year-old lorry driver from Bande Bommasandra in Hoskote taluk, believed to be suffering from prolonged illness, died in a private hospital here on Thursday. His relatives and friends claim he died following consumption of spurious liquor. However, they have not filed a police complaint regarding the death. The man has been identified as Rajappa. According to villagers at Bande Bommasandra, he consumed illegally sold alcohol in his village on Thursday and later complained of severe stomach pain and burning sensation in the eyes. He was rushed to a private hospital in Bangalore where he died. Villagers told The Hindu that Rajappa and his three friends consumed country-made liquor. He collapsed due to excess drinking and was shifted to the hospital. While his friends recovered, Rajappa died. “The liquor was made a few days ago and in the most unhygienic way. Illegal liquor manufacturers supply contaminated liquor in the vicinity of Bande Bommasandra. Even petty shop-keepers buy country-made liquor and sell them to villagers. About 75 per cent of the villagers, including women and children, are addicted to alcohol,” said Subrahmanya, worker at a flourmill. Meanwhile, Hoskote police inspector Mallesh said: “Rajappa was an alcoholic. Doctors, who conducted the autopsy, said that he died due to prolonged illness. Also, his relatives or family members have not lodged a complaint.” According to the police, the incident is being linked to spurious liquor in order to claim compensation from the State Government.
