Argentina and Serbia advance

LONDON: David Nalbandian beat Andreas Vinciguerras to help Argentina post a 3-2 victory over host Sweden and enter the Davis Cup quarterfinals on Sunday. In other ties, Serbia beat the United States while Chile went into the final day of play leading Israel 2-1.

Sweden and Argentina were level at 2-2 before Nalbandian won the final match 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to clinch the series at Stockholm's Royal Tennis Hall.

Nalbandian broke Vinciguerra for a 2-1 lead in the fourth set and held his serve the rest of the way, converting his first match point with a backhand winner to line up a last-eight meeting with Russia.

Marathon match

Novak Djokovic outlasted John Isner 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-4 to give Serbia an unbeatable 3-1 lead over the United States in Belgrade. Sam Querrey later beat Viktor Troicki 7-5, 6-2 to make it 3-2.

Serbia will now face bitter Balkan rival Croatia for a place in the semifinals.

At Stockholm: Sweden 2 lost to Argentina 3 (Andreas Vinciguerra lost to David Nalbandian 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4).

At Belgrade: Serbia 3 bt USA 2 (Novak Djokovic bt John Isner 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-4; Viktor Troicki lost to Sam Querrey 7-5, 6-2).

At Coquimbo: Chile 2 leads Israel 1 (Nicolas Massu bt Dudi Sela 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4; Fernando Gonzalez bt Harel Levy 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4l; Paul Capdeville & Jorge Aguilar lost to Jonathan Erlich & Andy Ram 6-7(5), 7-6(9), 2-6, 6-1, 6-0) . — Agencies
