The Hindu Trophy from today

VISAKHAPATNAM: The 17th annual The Hindu Trophy cricket tournament, the first tournament sponsored by the Kasturi and Sons, publishers of The Hindu in Andhra Pradesh and also the only prize money tournament of the City that is being conducted without a break, will commence here on Tuesday.

The final is scheduled for March 14.

The Visakhapatnam Port Sports Council, strengthened by the recruitment of four young Andhra players and fresh from its success in the all-India Major Ports tournament, is confident of retaining the crown it won last year.

15 teams in fray

Among the 15 teams in the fray are Metro CC, which won the trophy eight times, last year's runner-up Cavaliers CC, East Coast Railway Sports Association, Gajuwaka Greens, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, HSBC, M.F. Khan CC.

The Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association (VDCA) is organising the limited-over tournament on behalf of The Hindu, the Regional General Manager of The Hindu, T.V. Suresh, said here on Monday.

The winning team will receive a glittering silver trophy and prize money of Rs. 10,000, while the runner-up will receive Rs. 5,000.

The best player on view would get the Sportstar Player of the Tournament award, which also carries a cash prize. There are special prizes for best batsman, bowler and all-rounder.

The matches will be played at the Port Stadium, ACA-VDCA Stadium, Zinc Stadium and the Ukku Stadium.

Someswara scalps five

Medium-pacer M. Someswara Rao's five for 35 was the highlight of Cargo Handlers' Pool's 81-run win over Andhra Medical College in the VDCA institutions cricket league in Visakhapatnam on Monday.

HPCL beat Avengers CC by five wickets in the second division clubs league.

The scores:

Institutions league: Cargo Handlers' Pool 181 for nine in 30 overs (G.P. Raju 39, P. Ramana 25, Chaitanya three for 20, Ramana Murthy three for 60) bt Andhra Medical College 100 in 22.5 overs (G. Uday Kumar 34, M. Someswara Rao five for 35, G.P. Raju three for 24) .

Royal CC takes trophy

Royal Cricket Club, for the fourth consecutive year, lifted the Krishna District Cricket Association's Power League trophy defeating New Everest Cricket Club by 100 runs at Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium here on Sunday. Ranji player A. Rakesh's 163 for Royal CC was the highlight of the match.

Royal CC 285 in 50 overs (A. Rakesh 163, T.K. Ganesh three for 74, A.G. Pradeep three for 33) bt New Everest CC 185 in 35.3 overs (R.P. Srikanth 44, T.K.Ganesh 40, Dinesh Kumar five for 36).
