Historical value: The dolmens at Ariyannur.

Thrissur: Archaeological Survey of India, Thrissur circle, in association with the Kerala Historical Research Society organised a trip to heritage sites in the district recently.

The trip covered 14 monuments, including temples, dolmens, menhir and rock cut caves protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and the State Department of Archaeology.

The heritage trip was flagged off from Vadakkumnatha Temple, Thrissur, one of the oldest temples in the State.

The temple, which has a highly evolved tradition of architecture, wooden sculpture and mural painting, has been protected under the Archaeological Monuments and Archaeological Sites Remains Act 1958.

The team visited menhirs, the monolithic monuments, at Kuttor, Cherur and Villadam, and dolmens and rock-cut caves at Porkulam, Chiramanengad, Eyyal, Kattakambal and Kakkad. According to historians, the Dolmens are burial sites.

Though most of the monuments were well protected, the dolmen at Porkulam was in a neglected condition.

The monument excavated under eminent Archaeologist B.K. Thapar, between 1949-50, was under the State Department of Archaeology. The team also visited Palayur Church and Sri Rama Temple Kadavallur.

The team members urged the government to conduct a heritage survey in the State. About 45 people, including historians, architects and students were in the team.
