BANGALORE: In a prelude to the India Courts of Women on Dowry and Related Forms of Violence: Daughters of Fire, that begins in full form on Monday, a protest and candle-light vigil against dowry and violence was held at the Mahatma Gandhi Statue here on Sunday. The “Women in Black” protest began in 1993 after the demolition of the Babri Masjid, to protest against all forms of violence, including communal violence. Organised by Vimochana, a women’s rights trust, the protest saw the participation of support members of other human rights organisations and members of the sexuality minority community. The “Women in Black”, held in various conflict-torn countries, was attended by 150 women from various backgrounds, including those who will testify in the India Courts of Women in the coming days. Dressed in black, a colour they believe they wear in anguish and protest, the women condemned the practice of dowry with slogans and silence. Speaking to The Hindu, Celine of Vimochana said, “We have also taken this to Mysore, Mandya and Mangalore.” A public hearing will be held on Tuesday at the Christ University Auditorium, Hosur Road, between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.
