KRISHNAGIRI: The Kallavi police have registered First Information Report against 282 residents of Sandirapatti and its surrounding villages in Uthangarai Panchayat Union for blocking Chandripatti-Kallavi road recently.

They blocked the road on June 17 demanding full wages as per the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. These people were engaged in desilting Vedapatti lake in Sandirapatti panchayat.

Villagers told The Hindu on Friday that when they demanded the wage of Rs. 75 a day as promised by the panchayat, two officials opposed this.

They alleged that the duo ‘instigated’ them to block the road telling them that agitation was the only way to bring the Collector to the spot. They said that one of the officials did not properly record the entries in the job cards for payment and many cards were overwritten.

When the villagers blocked the road and refused to disperse, the Deputy Superintendent of Police ordered the policemen to arrest them following which they dispersed.

With the police registering the FIR, the villagers are tensed now.

“While we are toiling for our livelihood, we are told to pay a legal fee of Rs. 500 each and give two personal sureties for obtaining bail,” says Gouri of Ambedkar Colony in Sandirapatti.

Panchayat president Chinnapapa Chellakknnu has lodged a complaint with the Block Development Officer against one of the officials.

Darez Ahmed, Additional Collector (Development), told The Hindu that he came to know about the case against the villagers only now. He said that he would take necessary action against the duo.
