Lok Sabha told of Padmsinh Patil’s arrest

Vinay Kumar

NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Monday informed the House about the arrest of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) member Padamsinh Bajirao Patil.

In a brief statement, Ms. Kumar said she had received a communication from the Special Crime Branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation, Mumbai on June 6, intimating arrest and lodgement of Mr. Patil under the provisions of Rule 229 of the Rules of Procedure and the Conduct of Business in the Lok Sabha.

The Speaker said that as per the directions of the Bombay High Court vide its order of October 23, 2008 in criminal writ petition no. 81 of 2008, the investigation of crime no. 220 of 2006 of the Kalamboli police station was transferred to the CBI, which registered an FIR on March 20, 2009.

Ms. Kumar informed the House that Mr. Patil was arrested for allegedly committing offences under Sections 120-B and 302 of the Indian Penal Code in connection with the double murder of Pawan Rajenimbalkar and Samad Abdul Wahid Kazi on June 3, 2006 at Panvel in Maharashtra.

Senior NCP leader and Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said the party would “completely dissociate” itself from Mr. Patil if charges against him were proved.

The Congress remained non-committal on the arrest. Shakeel Ahmed, party spokesperson, said the law would take its own course.
