The award is in recognition of outstanding contribution to economic theory that addresses contemporary realities and supports just and sustainable societies. It is given by the Global Development and Environment Institute at Tufts University, US. The presentation ceremony will be held later this year. Distinguished winners of the award in previous years include John K. Galbraith, Amartya Sen, Paul Streeten, Herman Daly, Dani Rodrik and Robert Wade. Ms. Agarwal has done pioneering theoretical and empirical work in the fields of agriculture, women’s land and property rights, environment and development. She is also the author of the internationally-acclaimed book “A Field of One’s Own” published by the Cambridge University Press. Along with Amartya Sen and Joseph Stiglitz (chair), Ms. Agarwal is a member of the high-power Commission set up by French President Nicolas Sarkozy for measurement of economic performance and social progress. In 2005, Ms. Agarwal had led a successful campaign for comprehensive amendment of the Hindu Succession Act that has given women equal rights with men in agricultural land and ancestral property. In 2008 she was awarded the Padma Shri.
