HYDERABAD: Given the thick green cover that it has nurtured over the decades, temperature inside the Nehru Zoological Park usually is 2 degree Celsius less than the mark that mercury touches in the city. Yet as the summer turns harsh with temperature soaring every day, animals here, mainly those sensitive to heat are being provided some special care. With a budget of around Rs.60,000, authorities have installed various measures including air coolers for the animals that cannot withstand extreme heat conditions at the zoo that sprawls over 300 acres. As of now, eight coolers have already been installed in animal houses including those meant for tigers, jaguar, lions and chimpanzee. It has been ensured that when these animals retire to their resting place, a cooler environ is in place for them. The aviary too has been given special protection from heat with ‘thunga’ (dry grass) cover for parrots and other birds while ‘khas thattis’ have been put on the cage tops and sprinkled with water at regular intervals. “Elephants have a pool and to escape the temperature, they just go and take a dip there,” says Sekhar Reddy, assistant conservator. Special provision to put necessary measures during summer is earmarked in the zoo budget and around Rs.60,000 is used for the purpose now, he says. ArrangementsBeing a vacation time for educational institutions, summer attracts a large number of visitors and the zoo authorities have made arrangements to meet an increased rush.
