Hindraf vows to continue campaign against “marginalisation” of ethnic Indians in Malaysia

P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: The Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) vowed on New Year’s Day to carry forward its campaign against the alleged “marginalisation” of the ethnic Indian minority in Muslim-majority Malaysia. Continuing a programme of protest through prayers, Hindraf on Tuesday organised a mass ceremony of “shaving heads” on the precincts of the Baladandayuthapani temple in Penang. According to Hindraf Coordinator Thanenthiran, 150 “supporters” of the group of various age groups, including women, participated in the ceremony. A “peaceful procession” of devotees was also organised, and the security personnel near the temple site did not intervene, Mr. Thanenthiran said.

In an “international” campaign, Hindraf is seeking one million signatures to demand the release of the group’s five leaders.
