CHENNAI: In a bid to combat the mosquito menace in the city, the Corporation has launched a drive to carry out fogging and spraying operation on city waterways through boats.
The drive was inaugurated by Mayor M. Subramanian at the Buckingham Canal in Tiruvanmiyur on Wednesday. Six fibre boats worth Rs.1 lakh would be given to six zones, namely 1 to 4 and 9, 10, to eradicate mosquitoes in waterways such as Buckingham Canal, Captain Cotton Canal, Otteri Nullah and K.K. Nagar canal, a release said. Fishing boats would be used for spraying operation in bigger waterways such as the Adyar and the Cooum.
Mr. Subramanian said that about 20 foot sprayers worth Rs.1 lakh would be used to wipe out mosquitoes in the canals. Measures were also being taken to procure fogging machines worth Rs.20 lakh. He said that 332 hand sprayers and 111 fogging machines were being used to prevent mosquito breeding in stormwater drains and water stagnation areas.
About 1,200 Corporation staff were involved in the operation. He also urged residents to ensure that the environment was clean, without water stagnation and dumping of plastic material in the waterways.
