Traffic signals to function till 3 a.m. on New Year’s eve
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI: Automatic traffic signals in the city will continue to function till 3 a.m. on January 1, 2008 in view of the New Year celebration, the city traffic police have said.
According to a press release issued here on Wednesday, police would programme the signals in such a way that instead of coming to amber at the appropriate time, it would continue to be operational till the early hours of January 1. Traffic police personnel would monitor vehicular movement and violators will be penalised, the release said.
In this connection, police would commence a special drive from Thursday onwards along with the Hyundai Traffic Volunteers, Traffic Wardens, Home Guards and Road Safety Patrol members. There will be intensified checks along Kamarajar Salai, ECR, Anna Salai, GST Road, EVR Salai, Poonamallee High Road (NH 4), GNT Road, Inner Ring Road and other accident-prone roads and intersections.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunil Kumar said the idea of deploying volunteers along with the traffic police was to educate the motorists on avoiding rash driving and drunk driving, on wearing helmets while riding two-wheelers, wearing seat-belts and not speaking over mobile phone while driving.
After observing the procedures under Section 207 of Motor Vehicles Act, the vehicles would be detained, he warned. The traffic police have sought the cooperation of the public in this regard.
