“Not correct to fault TV scheme”
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Merely because there were minor problems in a few centres where free colour television sets were distributed, it was not correct to fault the entire scheme, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said here on Wednesday.
In a statement explaining how the Government had meticulously planned and carried out the distribution, Mr. Karunanidhi said lakhs of sets were distributed across the State and had reached people who did not own a television.
A few sets were seized in police raids conducted at Washermanpet, Egmore and Chintadripet. Six persons were arrested from Washermanpet, Ashok Nagar and Cherian Nagar and seven sets were seized. In Egmore, four sets and an autorickshaw were confiscated and nine sets seized from some people on Ritchie Street.
The Chennai Police Commissioner warned that anyone buying the sets would be held under the Goondas Act. Raids were being conducted across the State to ensure that the sets were not sold, he said.
