CII plans to redefine fishing practices

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is working on a long-term programme to redefine the fishing practices of tsunami-affected coastal communities and introduce international standards and best practices in fishing.

“The idea is to facilitate a transformation of mindset of fishermen so that they will practice sea-farming technologies and utilise new processing technologies of international standards,” said N. Kumar, Chairman, CII tsunami Task Force, on Tuesday, on the eve of the the 3rd anniversary of the tsunami.

Timely help

“Post-tsunami, CII members quickly rallied to help the victims, not only with offers of cash and expertise, but also with a long term sustainable vision to ensure a better future for the community. A task force, comprising experts from different development verticals, was formed by CII to draw a long term sustainable development plan to facilitate reconstruction of institutions, economies and livelihoods in south India,” he said.

According to him, the task force worked out a three-phase rehabilitation plan, which focussed on immediate livelihood, capacity building and redefining fishing practices with the aim of re-engineering the livelihood mechanism of the fishermen community. It sought to be a catalyst in the rehabilitation process.

“We also worked with the local administration and NGOs and implemented a large-scale livelihood enhancement programme. This included support for community resource centres to facilitate community development, capacity building, skill training besides health and education infrastructure for the affected community,” he said.

Besides, CII facilitated the establishment of a fish auction centre and multipurpose halls. Over 1,200 acres of agricultural land, rendered saline, was reclaimed through organic methods and more than 1,400 ponds were desilted in Nagapattinam.
