Medal-winning Tamil Nadu athletes felicitated

CHENNAI: The medal-winning athletes of Tamil Nadu in the recent SAF junior athletic meet in Colombo and the junior National championship were felicitated at a function organised by the Tamil Nadu Athletics Association here on Friday.

Ten athletes from Tamil Nadu were to go to the SAF meet, but high jumper Anandi could not make it.

The remaining nine returned with medals. A. Jessy won the gold in 100 metres and 200m apart from a silver in the 4x100m relay.

Gayathri won a silver in 4x100m relay, V. Hani won a bronze in 100m, T. Balamurugan a gold in 110m hurdles, V. Deepankumar won a silver in triple jump, Hemant Kirulkar won a silver in 100m and 4x100 m relay each, Nikhil Chittarasu a silver in high hump and A. Premkumar a silver in 4x100m relay.

These medallists were honoured with a shawl and cash incentive. The medallists of the Vijayawada junior Nationals were also present.

TNAA President, W.I. Davaram, presided over the function. Present on the occasion were T.K. Rajendran, IGP and Vice-President, TNAA, R. Arumugham, President, Chennai DAA, and Shivasankar, MLA, and President, Perambalur DAA.

Postponed

Inclement weather has forced a postponement of the final round of the 3rd edition of J K Tyre Junior Racing Cup from December 22-23 to December 29-30.

The final round consisting of five races with 10 laps each will be held as per the following schedule: Day 1 (Saturday) will feature 3 races while Day 2 (Sunday) will have 2 races.

SBI pips RBI

SBI edged RBI 3-2 in a CFA senior division football league match at the Nehru stadium on Friday.

RBI shot into lead in the 38th minute through R. Kuppuraj who made the most of a solo to come up with a 40-yard beauty. But SBI equalised two minutes later when M. Bhaskaran found a right footer on target.

Always a tricky side, SBI found the openings and went into lead, a minute before lemon time through a penalty kick conversion by M. Regin. The penalty was awarded after C.S. Sebith was brought down in the danger area by RBI’s Jayapal Fernando.

Even though Kuppuraj restored parity in the 53rd minute, SBI found the winner in the 67th minute off a header by P.C. Riju.

Earlier in the first divison, FCI and Central Excise shared four goals. Pradeep and Dilip Kumar scored for FCI while Annamalai and Satish Kumar found the mark for Excise.

Einstein to lead

N. Einstein will lead the Tamil Nadu under-19 cricket team in the Cooch-Behar Elite knockout matches scheduled in Hyderabad from December 24.

Venkat advances

Venkatachalam edged out Muthukumarasamy 7-6 (4) to enter the final of the 55-plus singles event of The Hindu-Sportstar KTC veterans tennis tournament here on Friday.

In the doubles event in the same age category, Venkatachalam and Krishnan will play C.H. Naidu and T.N. Prasad.

Twenty20 cricket

Nine teams are taking part in the Twenty20 inter-club cricket tournament, which is to be organised by the Madras Gymkhana Club from Saturday 22 for the Singaram Trophy. The event will be inaugurated by the past President of the Madras Gymkhana Club, Mr. T.K. Singaram at the Marina Ground. Madras Gymkhana Club takes on Madras Cricket Club in the opening match.

Chess tournament
