CHENNAI: The medal-winning athletes of Tamil Nadu in the recent SAF junior athletic meet in Colombo and the junior National championship were felicitated at a function organised by the Tamil Nadu Athletics Association here on Friday. Ten athletes from Tamil Nadu were to go to the SAF meet, but high jumper Anandi could not make it. The remaining nine returned with medals. A. Jessy won the gold in 100 metres and 200m apart from a silver in the 4x100m relay. Gayathri won a silver in 4x100m relay, V. Hani won a bronze in 100m, T. Balamurugan a gold in 110m hurdles, V. Deepankumar won a silver in triple jump, Hemant Kirulkar won a silver in 100m and 4x100 m relay each, Nikhil Chittarasu a silver in high hump and A. Premkumar a silver in 4x100m relay. These medallists were honoured with a shawl and cash incentive. The medallists of the Vijayawada junior Nationals were also present. TNAA President, W.I. Davaram, presided over the function. RBI shot into lead in the 38th minute through R. Kuppuraj who made the most of a solo to come up with a 40-yard beauty. But SBI equalised two minutes later when M. Bhaskaran found a right footer on target. Always a tricky side, SBI found the openings and went into lead, a minute before lemon time through a penalty kick conversion by M. Regin. The penalty was awarded after C.S. Sebith was brought down in the danger area by RBI’s Jayapal Fernando. Even though Kuppuraj restored parity in the 53rd minute, SBI found the winner in the 67th minute off a header by P.C. Riju. Earlier in the first divison, FCI and Central Excise shared four goals.
