Golf
BANGALORE: The rain may have abated, but the havoc it caused continued on the second day of the Global Green Bangalore Open golf tournament. Most golfers played 25 or more holes, depending on how many holes they had completed on the first day. Of the 126 in the line-up, 107 completed two rounds and some five groups would have to complete the second round on Saturday. But despite the extended hours on the course, Gurki Shergill, C. Muniyappa, Uttam Singh Mundy, Rahul Ganapathy and a few others would not be complaining. Gurki Shergill, with a cumulative of nine-under 135, led the field among the lot that had finished. Muniyappa secondKGA’s C. Muniyappa was handily placed in second position with a score of five-under 139 for the two rounds. Eleven golfers returned with sub-par scores and the cut would be applied only on the completion of the two rounds. Shergill, the 29-year-old Pune professional, has been on the circuit for some time now. He has a couple of top 10 finishes and is still searching for that elusive title. Having reached the half-way stage of the tournament, Shergill knows this could be his best chance for a top spot finish. Bogey-free roundShergill completed his first round with a bogey-free round and with six birdies on the third, fifth, sixth, eighth, 11th and 16th, he could not have asked for a better start. He carried on his fine form into the second round where he had seven birdies (first, third, fifth, 12th, 14th, 16th and 17th). But it was mixed with four bogeys on the fourth, sixth, 10th and 11th. Shergill oozed confidence when he said he had “no weaknesses and whoever was going to beat him would have to play very hot golf.” The scores (amongst those who have completed two rounds): 135 (66, 69) Gurki Shergill; 139 (70, 69) C. Muinyappa; 140 (70, 70) Shamim Khan, (70, 70) Rahul Ganapathy, (69, 71) Feroz Ali Mollah; 141 (75, 66) Uttam Singh Mundy; (74, 67) Gaganjeet Bhullar, (73, 68) Arjun Singh (69, 72) Gurbaaz Mann; 142 (70, 72) S.S.P. Chowrasia. Amateurs: 144 (70, 74) Arjun Lall; 154 (80, 74) P. Krishna; 156 (78, 78) Darshan Veeraraghavan.
