Suggestion was made at a national conference SURATHKAL: A technical paper presented at the three-day Indian National Conference on Harbour and Ocean Engineering has recommended that the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) immediately construct an additional oil jetty for handling crude and POL (petroleum, oil and lubricants) together. The conference which began on Wednesday is being held at the National Institute of Technology – Karnataka (NIT-K) here. Technical paperThe paper titled “Infrastructure planning of New Mangalore Port for oil dock arm up to 2021-22” by Kiran G. Shirlal, Assistant Professor, Department of Applied Mechanics and Hydraulics, NIT-K, and Sumana K.N., an M.Tech student at NIT-K, said that the jetty could be built in the first phase of infrastructure development which is up to 2011-2012. In the second phase of development, from 2012 to 2017, the deepening of the entrance channel and lagoon area should be taken up to cater to berthing of larger ships. The paper said that four more berths were required to handle the cargo traffic during the third phase from 2017-2022. While analysing the import and export of cargo at the port, they said that after studying the cargo movement at the port between 2002 and 2006 it was observed that of the total imports at the port, two-thirds were from West Asia. Over 80 per cent of the imports from West Asia related to crude oil. Half of the total exports from the port were to China. Tad S. Murty, professor at the University of Ottawa, Canada, inaugurated the conference. P. Tamilvanan, chairman, NMPT, Sandeep Sancheti, director, NIT-K, spoke. The conference was jointly organised by the NMPT and NIT-K. Papers were presented on different subjects. .
