Party workers’ meetings to be held from December 25 Resolution demands action against the menace of terrorism DAVANGERE: Bharatiya Janata Party State unit president D.V. Sadananda Gowda and spokesperson S. Suresh Kumar on Wednesday made it clear that the former Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa will be the party’s chief ministerial candidate in the coming elections to the Legislative Assembly. Both the leaders made separate statements to this effect after the valedictory of the two-day State executive here. On Tuesday, BJP national vice-president and Karnataka in-charge Yashwant Sinha indicated that the party would have to follow the prescribed procedures before taking any important decisions and cited the example of how the decision to project L. K. Advani as the prime ministerial candidate had to wait till the issue was cleared by the Party Central Board. He had told the State leaders that similar procedures had to be followed by the State unit. This was interpreted by some dissident leaders as an indication that the decision on chief ministerial candidate was still open for discussion. Mr. Gowda said the party would face the elections under collective leadership but with Mr. Yeddyurappa as chief ministerial candidate. “Party president Rajnath Singh has already said that Mr. Yeddyurappa is the chief ministerial candidate,” he said. Sources in the party said the party central board would have to take a formal decision on the matter. The concluding session of the party State executive decided to hold party workers’ meetings in all the 224 Assembly constituencies from December 25 to January 20 to review the party’s poll preparations and also to elicit the views of the workers on poll-related issues. It has also decided to hold various State and district-level events in January and February to mark the 150th year of the 1857 war of independence. On the final day, the BJP State executive adopted a resolution demanding stringent action against growing menace of terrorism and acts of violence, including naxalism. It demanded that naxalism be declared as an act of terrorism and anti-national activity and not a social problem. It suggested setting up of a military training institute in Kuduremukh forest area to combat naxalism.
